Colton Phillips, a workaholic crime scene investigator with the NYPD, likes to investigate paranormal activities in his spare time, and has spent a lot of that personal time studying visitations from beyond the grave. 

Having accumulated some vacation time, he visits Pineville, a small town in upstate New York, which has been plagued in the past by mysterious axe murders.  It’s a case that remained unsolved, as the murders stopped for a long while.  While in Pineville, Colton comes upon an old farm house where he finds a hand held mirror with a solid gold back.  This mirror reputedly came from Egypt and has been used as a portal to travel back and forth from the spirit world to the material world by those who possessed it.   Abruptly, the murders begin again, and the female victims are usually made love to by a beautiful and buxom blonde woman before they’re possessed by her and invariably end up murdering their mates.   

Together with the help of local psychic, Sheri Osmire who has served with the FBI, Colton learns that the murders are being committed by the spirit of Marge Borden, the illegitimate, incestuously fathered daughter of the infamous Lizzie Borden who also joins her daughter in the murderous sprees.  Afterwards, they use the mirror as a portal to return to the spirit world.  Marge and Lizzy Borden are on a mission to find a way to become immortal and obtain a body of flesh and bones.  Colton and Sheri have their work cut out for them as they try to prevent this from happening.  Their work together will lead them into many hair raising adventures, including trips to Egypt and The Dead Sea, and also into each other’s arms as husband and wife.  Colton also learns that Sheri has a kinky side, in that she’s bi-sexual and doesn’t mind having a couple extra women in their bed together with them.  Surprisingly, Colton finds that he doesn’t mind this, and eventually he enjoys their sexual escapades with a lesbian couple they encounter during their investigation, who become part of their lives.  The lesbian couple, Jody and Alexis, are white witches with psychic gifts of their own that they contribute to helping Colton and Sheri bring an end to Marge and Lizzie’s bloody reign of terror.

Aileen found herself deep in a forest.  She looked around trying to get her bearing.  Where was she?  What made her come to this forest?  Being very cautious, she pulled out a small flashlight to see in the dark.  Looking over to her right, she noticed two glowing eyes that were staring right at her.  Looking around, she found some dry firewood and started a fire to keep warm.  Strange sounds filled the air creating an eerie atmosphere around her.  With her eyes glued to the two glowing eyes, she lit a smoke to calm her shattered nerves. 

In a split second, she felt the presence of someone behind her. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up as she slowly turned around.  A man dressed in a black robe stared at her in silence.  A shiny, glowing yellow  X adorned his robe.  He held a dagger in each hand.  As Aileen turned around, she fell to the ground, fearful for her life.  She could see that this strange being had golden gills, which told her that he could breathe under water.  This fascinated her and her feelings of fear soon dissipated. 

After getting up, she lit another cigarette and sat down on a nearby log.  They both studied each other waiting for one of them to strike up a conversation.  The fire crackled as he walked closer to her. In a very uncanny way, Aileen trusted this strange man.  Her nervousness ceased.  She reached out to grab his hand to see if he was real.  He in turn reached out to her and brought her closer to him.  After embracing her, he drew both of the daggers and stuck them in each of her ears. Blood shot out, driving Aileen to her knees.  In a split second, Jack shook her to wake her up.

Grabbing his flashlight, Detective Mike Smith notices a woman slumped over.  He shines the light into her eyes and notices that she has no pupils.   Looking a little closer, he notices that an “X” is carved in her forehead with a knife.  With blood dripping out her mouth, she raises a large knife and charges at him.  In a moment of terror, this strange woman vanishes from his sight.

In Redemption, Scott Winfield explores many worlds in order to create such a literary masterpiece.  Redemption is a thrilling, mind boggling and unpredictable trip for those readers who want to follow the horror, pursuit and capture of serial killing big names, such as Jack the Ripper and Ted Bundy.  The challenge of this work is the chase, taking the readers for a usual ride.  The plot is laced with diverse details, mixing modern-day real-world police work with the surreal fictional accounts of the unknown.
