In this third installment of the Grego Books, Jason Grego's son Michael, now grown up, sets out on his own adventure. While at sea, his boat is damaged but he manages to sail to a mysterious island. At the docks he is met by a beautiful red haired woman to whom he's immediately drawn. He learns that her name is Linda Parker.

After they become acquainted, she takes him to her home where he's made welcome. He has no idea that the young woman's father knew his own father, Jason Grego, and was helped by him on one of his time travels. While on the island, he decides to stay for a while and attend a police academy to be come an investigator. This is arranged by Ted Parker, the richest man on the island, who is also Linda's, father. Michael's first case after graduation centres on an old diary he finds, describing a 26 year old murder case...a murder involving members of his own family. He has as also been granted the gift of time travel by the same entity that bestowed it on his father, Jason. Thus using this gift, he travels back to the time when the murder was committed by some very dangerous rich men, and 'upstanding citizens' of the island. He realizes the danger of taking on these men as they will stop at nothing to keep their crime hidden. Will Michael come back alive from the past and solve this case?
