EXCERPT

This was the opening she had been waiting for. "Adam, I have something to tell you."

"Sounds serious, my love."

"This is very difficult. You have no idea."

"Just begin at the beginning."

"Do you remember the last night we were together the summer in 1956, and you left for University the next day?"

"Yes, of course, it was the night we made love."

"Yes, Adam, and when you didn't call or write to me or come home at Thanksgiving, I was devastated."

"I'm sorry, my darling, I had no idea. The weather was so bad I couldn't come for the weekend and when I did finally get there you had already left Cranston."

"Part of it is true, I was away, but not in Toronto. The truth is that out of our love, I became pregnant."

"What the hell are you saying?"

She opened the locket, "These are our twin daughters Adam."

"Where the hell are they? When were they born?"

"They were born exactly ten years ago today in a home for unwed mothers."

"Where are the twins? Who has them? Does your aunt have them?"

"As soon as they were born, they were taken away from me, and adopted a few days later."

"Godamn you Christina. You gave away my kids! You gave away my parents' grandchildren. What the hell kind of monster are you? Your own flesh and blood! How the hell could you do this?"

"Don't you swear at me Adam. Where were you when I needed you? I was just a kid. I had nothing, I had nowhere to run, and no one to turn to, so don't blame me for what happened."

"I have to blame you. No one in their right mind gives away their kids. What the hell is wrong with you? Why haven't you tried to find them? It's been ten years."

"Finally, her anger rose and she shouted, "Don't you think I've tried. The records are sealed. The adoptions were final. Those babies are lost to me forever, get that through your thick head."

"His eyes pierced her heart. She watched as the love light disappeared and was replaced with shock and dislike. "I will never forgive you for this, Christina. So help, I will never understand what possessed you to give them up without a fight. I don't want you in my life, I don't want to marry you, it would be a mistake.

She was stunned. "Adam, no, don't leave me. Don't leave me again. Please don't leave me," but the sound of her hoarse cries echoed upon the walls of her apartment. She collapsed in a heap upon the sofa, sobbing convulsively, unable to cope with the sudden loss. Her entire world had just walked out the door.
