I was born in 1940 in St Andrews Scotland, the Home of Golf. I spent a year as a navigating cadet on an ocean-going tanker; a year at the Scottish College of Commerce for a diploma in business admin; 3 years as an artillery surveyor and sound ranger in the British Army. I then did a 3-year ‘apprenticeship’ in civil engineering. Started as chainman/labourer, and worked up through every department of Wm Briggs and Sons in Forres (the Vares of MacBeth). Working during the day, I spent the evenings studying for a diploma in highway engineering. By the time I got it, I was already area projects engineer. Emigrated to Australia. Spent my working life as Project manager/Contracts manager/General manager in construction companies in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

After the death of my beautiful Eurasian wife, I married a PNG woman on the rebound – the worst decision of my life. Over the years she stole/misused most of my money. Finally, before she could steal any more, I used what was left to build a house on a block of land I’d previously bought in the hills. With not much money left, I had to do it on the cheap. Designed the house myself, then hired an out-of-work walkaround sawmill to cut up a few of my trees into various size timbers for the house. I have spent the time since desperately trying to support my two adopted PNG daughters. With no pension, social security etc, it’s a case of find the money somehow or starve. Nobody employs 76-year-old construction project managers.
