A WORM IN EDEN

W. Richard St. James

What would happen in the future if we discover we are alone?  Wouldn't we decide that it is our destiny to seed the universe?  Wouldn't we risk everything to send out those Seeds, to fill a galaxy with life?   What if we were wrong?  What would happen then?

What would happen if one of those Seeds went astray, far out into intergalactic space?  If it lay dormant for a thousand years while the rest of the world came out to meet it?  If its children grew up thinking they were alone, so very alone?

EXCERPT

"THAT WAS WONDERFUL," Noah sighed.  Sarah kissed him tenderly on the forehead, and went into the bathroom.  She stood before the mirror, and spread herself to look at the tattered remnants of her virginity.  It had been more difficult and painful than she had expected, and there had been blood, quite a lot of blood.  Noah had done something unexpected and wonderful then.  He had withdrawn, and cleansed her with his tongue.  She had climaxed at his first touch, and each one thereafter.  Then he had kissed her, sharing the sharp taste of her sacrifice.  This is my body, broken for you, she had thought, this is my blood.  And in that sweet communion she had felt such intense pleasure, such joy in every ounce of her being, that she barely noticed that he had reclaimed his hold on her.  And then, he had reached behind her, and he had taken possession of her with a probing finger, and he had held her that way, filling her utterly, and he had used that hold upon her to pull her back and forth, ever more rapidly, until they collapsed together in one final, overwhelming orgasm.  He had smiled in bliss and triumph then, and she had kissed him, once on the forehead, and left him to come here before the bathroom mirror.

Why was she standing here, gazing at her image, frozen by her own beauty?  She needed to finish cleaning up and return to his embrace.  It's over now, she thought, looking at herself in the mirror.  I'm not a virgin any longer; I'm not Joan of Arc.  She was a good person.  She had chosen the slow, quiet ways of life and peace and love.  There was a bottle of pills on the counter.  Each pill would release an egg.  Each egg would release a new life, a new unique human being.  She would be a mother to many, grandmother to more.  She would live for many years, maybe a thousand years or more, as a goddess on this planet.  There was nothing more that she could desire.

And yet, and yet.  When he had licked her blood, she had pretended it was her sister.  When she had felt his finger in her bowels, she had pretended it was one of the lizards.  Only once, when he had kissed her, had she yielded to him as truly Noah, truly her husband.  Who was she really?  She moved closer to the mirror, then put out a hand to touch it.  The surface felt like cool jelly, and her hand sank into it.  "Oh my God!" she breathed, not daring to move, "oh my God!"
